The diversity of Atitlán, home to coffee growers, artisans and backstrap loom wavers, is what supports communities that cohabit this region. They are fortunate to count on the richest volcanic soil that provides important nutrients to coffee plants that in turn bring out beautiful coffee flavors.
We are always fascinated by the legacy of this region and the more than 84,000 years of existence that today growers enjoy to cultivate unique coffees.
Atitlán is located in the southwest part of Guatemala, this region gathers more than 84,000 years of geological events. What we enjoy today as one of the most beautiful nature reserves in Guatemala was a volcano eruption that resulted in a cauldron that formed the Atitlan lake with the view of three gorgeous volcanoes: Atitlán, Tolimán and San Pedro La Laguna.
The Xocomil, known as the winds produced by the lake mostly every afternoon, create a special microclimate together with the volcanic soil and the influence of the Pacific Ocean. In addition to that, the altitude of the coffee plantations from 1,500 to 1,700 m.a.s.l reduces the risk of pests and diseases which allow producers to produce the greatest coffee quality.
Associations with ancient practices inherited by their ancestors to preserve their environment grow Typica, Bourbon, Catuai and Caturra varieties mostly processed as washed, also known as SHB (Strictly Hard Bean) denser beans that thanks to the low temperatures and high altitudes at which the coffee is produced.
Eduardo Cabrera from Finca San José del Lago is part of La Familia, the Microlot Collection of Dinámica. A notable producer that represents the fourth generation in his family, who has been part of an important preservation project with his 200 hectares farm, which a big part is dedicated to a natural reserve that respects the habit of the national birds of the country.
He honors the presence of the beautiful landscape that surrounds his farm, while coffee is one of the main crops, he also grows bananas, beans, corn, tomatoes and other crops as an example of diversification of his farm.
